El Cotillo Festivities in Honour of Our Lady of Good Voyage

Aug. 12, 2025
Fuerteventura
On the northwest coast of Fuerteventura lies El Cotillo, a charming fishing village that captivates you at first sight. White sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, dreamlike sunsets and, above all, that slow, relaxed pace that invites you to live without rushing, to enjoy good company, savour local cuisine, and connect with nature in its purest form.

El Cotillo has managed to preserve its essence, keeping ancient traditions alive while creating new ways to celebrate that make everyone —locals and visitors alike— feel part of the festivities.

12–24 August: El Cotillo Festivities in Honour of Our Lady of Good Voyage

During these days, the streets come alive with music, activities, and joy. On 17 August, the town honours its patron saint with a vibrant procession in which local fishermen carry the statue of the Virgin through the streets, accompanied by the lively sounds of traditional Canarian folk music. The journey ends at the small pier (‘El Muellito’), where sailors await to lift her aboard a boat, marking the start of the moving maritime procession.

Another must-see event is “La Calada” (pronounced La Calá). At low tide, the town’s fishermen head to Playa del Río, near the Cotillo Lighthouse, where they cast the ‘chinchorro,’ a traditional fishing net. The fish they catch is then brought to the pier, where the ‘jarea’ process takes place. The fish is covered with concentrated salt and left to dry in the sun for a few hours on the pebbles before being refrigerated. This preparation is for the traditional barbecue of ‘jareas,’ served alongside ‘wrinkled potatoes’ and ‘gofio,’ to which all the town’s residents and visitors are invited, which this year will take place on 21 August.

The programme also features the Young Soloists Gathering (16 August), the Water Festival (20 August), Canarian bowls and fishing tournaments, and, to close the celebrations, the Night Procession (22 August), ending with fireworks and the fishermen’s traditional shouts of “Viva la Virgen del Buen Viaje!”.

Immerse yourself in local traditions and culture, and experience these festivities like a true local by staying at Coral Cotillo Beach.
